Description

The wind passing over a panel mounted on a flat roof creates behind it a suction zone that tends to lift it, rather like the air over an aeroplane wing. The windbreaker is mounted behind the row of modules and breaks this effect: the air flow is deflected, and the force pulling the panel upwards decreases. The practical consequence is simple - the system needs less weight placed on top in order to stay stable, and the roof is less loaded.

This version is the short one, sized for panels with a length between 1448 and 1779 mm, that is the compact formats of 60 or 120 cells frequently used in home installations. Less ballast means fewer concrete slabs carried onto the roof and a more comfortable load-bearing reserve on buildings with a sensitive floor slab. The sheet is protected with a Magnelis ZM310 coating, a layer of zinc-aluminium-magnesium that resists corrosion including on the cut edges, so the part requires no maintenance after installation. It does not have to be mounted across the whole panel array: often it is needed only on the exposed rows, at the edge of the roof. The K2 product warranty is 12 years, extendable to 20 years by sizing in K2 Base and documenting in K2 DocuApp.

K2 article code 2003249, a component of the S-Dome 6.10 system. Material: steel with Magnelis ZM310 coating (Zn-Al-Mg alloy). Mounted on the rear side of the module row, fixed to the Dome 6.10 Peak element with self-tapping screws 4.8 x 20 mm. The K2 Dome 6 system is covered by the German technical approval abZ no. Z-14.4-916; the number and placement of the windbreakers - around the perimeter, on the exposed rows or across the whole array - are established through the static calculation in K2 Base, depending on the wind zone, the height and the geometry of the building.

Who it suits

Suited to ballasted installations on flat roofs with compact panels of 1448-1779 mm, on buildings where the additional weight added to the floor slab must be kept to a minimum.

Terms explained

  • Ballast: The weight (usually concrete slabs or bricks) placed over the structure to hold the installation in place without making holes in the roof.
  • Uplift force: The force with which the wind pulls the panel upwards, as if it wanted to tear it off the roof.
  • Magnelis ZM310: A protective layer of zinc, aluminium and magnesium applied to the sheet, which prevents rusting including where the sheet has been cut.

The K2 short windbreaker is the wind deflection element mounted on the back of the module row in the S-Dome 6.10 system for flat roofs. Its role is aerodynamic: it reduces the suction and the uplift force acting on the panels, so that the amount of ballast needed to stabilise the structure decreases. K2 article code 2003249, sized for modules with a length of 1448-1779 mm, that is the more compact formats (generally panels of 60/120 cells).

It is made of steel sheet with Magnelis ZM310 coating, a Zn-Al-Mg alloy with high corrosion resistance, including at the cut edges. Fixing to the Dome 6.10 Peak element is done with self-tapping screws 4.8x20 mm.

The component belongs to the K2 Dome 6 system, covered by the German technical approval abZ no. Z-14.4-916. The placement of the windbreakers (around the perimeter, on the exposed rows or across the whole array) is established by calculation in K2 Base, depending on the wind zone, the height and the geometry of the building.
