Description

This is the three-phase meter version for installations in which the current is too large to pass through the device or in which the main busbar cannot be interrupted for installation. Instead of routing the cables through it, the device reads the current through rings mounted on the conductors, called current transformers. The result is the same: you see on the screen how much energy comes in and how much goes out and you can send the values on, through a data wire, to the inverter or to the monitoring system.

You tell it from the menu what current transformers you used (primary anywhere between 1 and 9999 A) and the meter does the calculation by itself, so the same part covers everything from an apartment block board to an industrial transformer station. It measures in both directions and shows on the backlit screen 16 quantities: kWh, kvarh, active, reactive and apparent power, power factor, frequency, the maximum consumption reached, voltages and currents on each phase. It also has a multi-tariff function, useful when energy is paid differently in time bands. It takes up 4 modules in the board (72 mm), has IP51 protection degree and, being MID certified, it can be used for real billing, including at electric car charging stations, where the customer pays per kWh.

Networks 3P4W, 3P3W and 1P2W, 230 V L-N / 400 V L-L, range 80-120% Un; current inputs through external transformers with a 1 A or 5 A secondary, programmable CT ratio with a primary of 1-9999 A. Class 0,5S accuracy on active energy according to IEC 62053-22 (respectively class 1 according to IEC 62053-21) and class 2 on reactive energy according to IEC 62053-23; frequency error ±0,2%. RS485 Modbus RTU communication, 1200-38400 bps, addresses 1-247, plus two configurable pulse outputs. The V2 version is MID certified according to Directive 2014/32/EU, with traceable number 0120/SGS0703, and ETL listed by Intertek.

Who it suits

Suitable for commercial buildings, industrial halls or apartment blocks where the current exceeds 100 A per phase or where the main busbar cannot be switched off for installation, as well as for charging stations where the energy is billed to the customer.

Terms explained

  • Current transformer (CT): A ring mounted around the cable, which transmits to the meter a much reduced copy of the real current, so that very large consumptions can be measured.
  • Class 0,5S: An accuracy step finer than the usual one, required where the measurement error turns directly into money on the bill.
  • MID certification: The European approval that allows the meter reading to be used legally for billing energy to a third party.

Technical details

Specifications confirmed from the manufacturer's datasheet

Eastron SDM630MCT is the indirect measurement version of the SDM630 series: the currents do not pass through the meter, but are read through external current transformers with a 1 A or 5 A secondary. The CT ratio is programmable from the menu, with a primary between 1 and 9999 A, which makes the meter suitable for main boards where the current far exceeds 100 A or where the main busbar cannot be interrupted for installation. It accepts 3P4W, 3P3W and 1P2W networks, at 230 V L-N / 400 V L-L, with an operating range of 80–120% of the nominal value.

The active energy accuracy is class 0,5S according to IEC 62053-22 (respectively class 1 according to IEC 62053-21), and the reactive energy is measured in class 2 according to IEC 62053-23; the frequency error is ±0,2%. The meter measures bidirectionally and shows on the backlit LCD 16 quantities: kWh, kvarh, active, reactive and apparent power, power factor, frequency, demand (dmd), voltages and currents on each phase. The multi-tariff function is available.

Communication is done over RS485 Modbus RTU, with speeds of 1200–38400 bps and addresses 1–247, plus two configurable pulse outputs. The enclosure has a width of 4 modules (72 mm) for DIN rail and IP51 protection degree. The V2 version is MID certified according to Directive 2014/32/EU (traceable number 0120/SGS0703) and ETL listed by Intertek, being accepted for fiscal metering, including at charging stations for electric vehicles.
